Day 10

Bible verse: Luke 12:32 – Don’t be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights in giving you the kingdom.

Alright, you have spent time thinking about what retirement looks like, and how much money you think you will need for retirement. Now, how do you invest? There are a number of different ways to invest and it can be very overwhelming. You need to remember that the financial industry is always trying to sell you on the latest and greatest and the industry makes their products confusing on purpose! My recommendation is to invest directly into Index Funds. The reason being is that Index Funds have consistently proven to earn 6-8% annually for long term investors. They are easy to manage and they have low fees. Once you start buying Index Funds, you can simply top them up annually. What is an index fund? It is simply buying a specified basket of investments (stocks/equities). For example, The Total Stock Market Index Fund invests in over 3500 US stocks. The stocks, or companies, may include companies such as Microsoft, Google, etc. The benefit of investing in an index fund is that your money is diversified over a number of companies and industries. How do you buy index funds? You can purchase Index Funds through a Financial Advisor or directly through a bank or brokerage. The benefit of purchasing directly through a brokerage such as Questrade for example, vs through a Financial Advisor is that you will pay less in fees. By purchasing Index funds through Questrade, you may pay fees of 0.2%, whereas purchasing a mutual fund through a Financial Advisor may have fees of 2%. A conservative rule of thumb is to have the % of bonds in your portfolio equal your age. For example, if you are 40 you may want to have 40% of your portfolio in bonds. The more adverse you are to risk the less money you invest in bonds.  Here is an example of a buy and hold asset allocation:

  • 40%-50% Total Stock Market Index Fund
  • 20% Total International Stock Market Index Fund
  • 30-40% Total Bond Market Index Fund
