Day 13

Bible verse: 2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

The topic for today is saving for your children’s education and tithing. How the heck are you going to save enough for your children’s education? Do I need to tithe? If so, how much should I be tithing? It is hard to save for your children’s education when there are so many other priorities… and you have 18 years before they go to school! In Canada, there is a program called Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), where the government will match certain portions of the money you save for education and also provide tax breaks. My wife and I made the decision that we would max this out when each of our kids were born ($2000). The reason for doing this right away is that it provides 18 years for your money to make more money. We also automate our RESP family account and have $50 monthly invest in the account. The account is invested in a high growth Index Fund (VGRO stock ticker), which we will transition to a lower risk or cash investment as the kids are closer to university age. In regards to tithing, the Bible’s guidance is 10%. However, I believe God looks at our hearts. We are to be compassionate and generous with what God provides.
